# What is an AI tutor?

> An AI tutor teaches a student one to one, asking questions and adjusting to them, instead of just answering. Here's how AI tutors work and what to look for.

Learn · Glossary

An AI tutor is software that teaches a student one to one: it explains ideas, asks questions back, adapts to what the student gets wrong, and helps them reach the answer themselves.

## Tutor vs chatbot

A general chatbot answers questions. A tutor teaches: it holds back the answer, gives a hint, checks understanding and remembers what the student found hard. The difference shows up on test day, when there's no chatbot to ask.

## What to look for

- Hints before answers
- Works in the student's language
- Photo and voice input for real homework
- Remembers mistakes and brings them back for practice
- Won't write essays for the student

## Questions

**Can an AI tutor replace a teacher?**

No. It helps between classes; teachers lead learning.

**Is an AI tutor safe for children?**

Look for one built for students, with guardrails and no answer-dumping.
