Generative AI in education: what it is and how to use it well
Definition
Generative AI is AI that creates new content (text, images, code or audio) from a prompt. In education it's used to draft plans and papers, give feedback, tutor students and generate practice.
Good uses
- Drafting lesson plans and question papers for teachers to edit
- Suggesting marks with reasons for teachers to approve
- Tutoring that asks questions instead of giving answers
- Fresh practice questions
Risks to manage
- Wrong answers stated confidently
- Students handing in AI work as their own
- Personal data typed into the wrong tools
- Bias in examples and feedback
Questions
- Should schools ban generative AI?
- Most are moving from bans to rules: where it's allowed, how to say you used it, and how work is checked.
- How do you keep people in charge?
- Let AI draft and suggest; let people approve and release.
