What is learning analytics?
Definition
Learning analytics is the use of data about learners (results, attendance, activity and progress) to understand how they're doing, spot who needs help early, and improve teaching.
Good uses
- Early warnings for students who are slipping
- Seeing which topics a class found hard
- Comparing progress across classes or cohorts
- Showing leaders what's working
Use it carefully
Analytics should lead to a conversation, not a label. Show the reasons behind a flag, and let teachers decide what to do.
Questions
- Is it the same as a report card?
- No. A report card is a summary; analytics is ongoing and used to act.
- Who should see it?
- Teachers and leaders, each for the students they're responsible for.
