What is TVET?
Definition
TVET (technical and vocational education and training) is education and training that prepares people for work, from technical skills to trades, delivered in schools, colleges, training institutes and workplaces.
What it includes
- Technical schools and polytechnics
- Vocational training institutes and trade schools
- Apprenticeships and workplace training
- Short skills courses for adults
Why it matters now
Many countries face skills gaps at the same time as youth unemployment. TVET closes that gap when training is practical, well assessed and connected to real jobs.
Questions
- Who runs TVET?
- Governments, colleges, private institutes and employers.
- How is TVET assessed?
- Mostly by practical, competency-based assessment.
