What is an exam blueprint?
Definition
An exam blueprint (or table of specifications) is a plan for a paper that sets how many marks go to each topic and each skill level before any question is written, so the paper tests what was taught.
How to make one
- List the topics
- With the weight each had in teaching.
- Choose the skill levels
- For example, remember, apply, analyse.
- Fill the grid
- Marks per topic per level, adding up to the paper's total.
- Write to the grid
- Then check the finished paper against it.
Questions
- Do board exams use blueprints?
- Many boards publish a pattern or blueprint for each subject.
- Can AI follow a blueprint?
- Yes. AI question papers can be drafted to a set mark and difficulty balance.
